MPI UK and Ireland Chapter has announced the launch of the President’s Charity. The first organisation to benefit from its support will be Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. The President’s Charity is a new initiative and the board voted unanimously in favour of the proposal.
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to women and their families affected by cervical cancer and cervical abnormalities. MPI UK and Ireland Chapter will support the charity by raising funds at its social events and promoting cervical screening. The Chapter is also planning to run information areas at its education events and offer advice, news and information via its newsletters, website and events so members are aware of the disease and how it can be detected, prevented and treated.
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust was chosen by current MPI UK and Ireland Chapter president Samme Allen, who recently appeared on Daybreak to highlight the issue having successfully beaten cervical cancer in 2010. MPI UK and Ireland Chapter is supporting Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust in memory of Denise Fraser (Harris), a committed and valued member of the chapter from 2000 to 2006. By choosing to support the charity, Samme’s aim is to raise awareness of the disease amongst MPI members and the wider meeting and events industry.
Samme comments: “I am delighted the board has agreed to support such a worthwhile charity. This is a cause that is extremely close to my heart. I am one of the lucky women who have been successfully treated for cervical cancer, but there are many thousands of women who are not aware of the devastating consequences it can have. It is one of the most preventable forms of cancer but we are at a 10 year low for cervical screening. Women aged between 25 and 34 are a key target group which fits in with the demography of our members. Through the MPI UK and Ireland Chapter I hope we can raise vital funds for the charity and raise awareness of cervical cancer and the valuable work Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust carries out.”
Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, says: “We are thrilled that MPI UK and Ireland have chosen Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust as their first ever President’s Charity and are very grateful to Samme for putting us forward. Not only will their support raise vital funds for services but with the demography of the MPI members being the age group where uptake is the lowest in the UK our relationship will provide a fantastic opportunity to remind every member of MPI that cervical cancer can be prevented thanks to cervical screening. Quite simply going for screening can save a life.”
