Church House celebrates 21st birthday

Church House Conference Centre, located in the heart of Westminster and one of London’s leading conference and event venues is celebrating its 21st birthday today.

Church House, general manager, Robin Parker said: “We have had 21 momentous years, during which Church House has grown from strength to strength.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal clients, staff and partners who have been instrumental in our growth.  This year alone has already seen a big jump in corporate events and we are looking forward to the impact that will have on our business for years to come.” Over the last 21 years, the centre has hosted a large number of public and corporate events, it has also welcomed through its doors Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal family on a regular basis as well as every serving Prime Minster and opposition leader since it opened. Church House has also seen a fundamental change in its clients over the last few years.  In particular with the   non-conference related use of the event space for award dinners, large receptions and other types of hospitality.

New business in the last year has included events for The Spectator Magazine, The Media Trust and The Capita Group.

As a building and venue, Church House has a rich heritage:  The current building was designed by the renowned architect, Sir Herbert Baker, and the foundation stone was laid by Her Majesty, Queen Mary on 26 June 1937. It took until 1940 to complete and was officially opened by His Majesty, King George Vl, on 10 June 1940.

The building suffered a direct hit in the early part of WWII but due to its exceptional construction only minimal damage was done. The Prime Minister of the day, Winston Churchill, was so impressed that the building was refurbished for use by the two Houses of Parliament for the remainder of the war.  Many historic speeches and events took place within the building during the war, creating a legacy that has lasted into the 21st century.

The venue continues to be used by government departments, corporates and associations seeking a high quality, central location for meetings and events.
