Political heavyweights take to the stage at Church House

Two political heavyweights took to the stage at Church House Conference Centre this week for a debate on The Art of Political Power.

The sold-out event was organised by Intelligence Squared, the world’s leading forum for live debate. It saw Robert Caro — often described as America’s greatest political biographer — quizzed on the nature of political power by William Hague, the former foreign secretary and former leader of the Conservative party. Caro has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, for his studies of the lives of Robert Moses and Lyndon B Johnson, and in 2010 he received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama.

Church House Conference Centre is no stranger to political debate having been used by the two Houses of Parliament during World War II with many historic speeches taking place within the building, including the announcement by Winston Churchill of the sinking of the battleship Bismarck. The Westminster venue has continued its political links hosting many government meetings over the years.

Intelligence Squared said: “Church House was an excellent venue for our evening with Robert Caro and William Hague, with its central, Westminster location and its atmospheric, historic auditorium.”

Church House Conference Centre’s General Manager Robin Parker commented: “To have one of the greatest political writers come to Church House in this superb event organised by Intelligence Squared and to see him questioned about his career and political knowledge was a great honour. It is just one of the many high-calibre political events we have hosted this year. These events are of immense interest to members of the public and it was great to see yet another high-profile speaker talk in front of a sold-out audience.”

Church House Conference Centre is situated in the heart of Westminster and is one of London’s most versatile event venues, accommodating between 2 and 664 guests. For further information call 020 7390 1590 or visit
